-¿Qué haces en la escuela, Conchita?
-Todas las mañanas repetimos lo que nos dice la profesora.

-If you don't stop speaking Spanish, girls, I'm going to have to move you to separate tables. I want you to speak only English so you can learn it well. In this country everybody speaks English.
-¿Qué tal te fue en la escuela, Conchita?
-It was fun today. The teacher read us a story and then he asked us to tell him what it was about. And then...
-Párale, párale ahí. Qué me vienes hablando en inglés, eso nomás faltaba, ni que fuéramos gringos. En esta casa hablamos español. No me vayas a salir como tus primas que nomás llegaron aquí y se volvieron puro inglés, y ahora ya no hablan ni gota de español. Aquí hablas puro español, ¿oíste?
-Yes, mother.
-¿Qué dijiste?
-Está bien, mamá.
-Okay, girls, I warned you. You sit here, Connie. And you, Rosie, you sit at that table. I don't want to hear Spanish spoken in this class. If your parents want to make the mistake of speaking Spanish to you, I can't do anything about it; but in my classroom, you speak only English. If I hear a single Spanish word from either of you, you'll have to stay in the room during recess.
-¿Cómo te fue en la escuela, Conchita?
-El teacher no nos dejó a mí y a Rosa salir en recess. Y then...

-Ahora sí que estamos curiosos. ¿Qué es esa revoltura? En la casa hablas español y en la escuela inglés, pero no me salgas con ese desbarajuste. Ya estás igual que los hijos de los vecinos, que no se les entiende nada.
-¿Puedo ir a jugar con los neighbors?
-¿Qué dijiste?
-¿Puedo ir a jugar con los vecinos?
-Bueno. Pero no me vengas hablando igual que ellos.
-Buenas tardes, tía Tillie.

-Connie! Are you still speaking Spanish?
-Mi mamá quiere que no se me olvide el español.
-That Celia and her ideas. Listen, Connie. If you want to get along here, you speak English, alright? If you keep on speaking Spanish you'll be treated badly in school, and later when you grow up and try to get a job, you won't be able to get a good one. Don't listen to your mother. You speak English all the time so you can learn it well, okay? I know what I'm telling you, Connie.

-Don't forget what I told you, Connie.
-¡Mamá!
-¿Qué pasó, Conchita? ¿Por qué corres dentro de la casa?
-El Tommie me dijo que yo había nacido aquí.
-Es verdad.
-Yo creía que había nacido en México.
-No, aquí naciste una vez cuando vine de visita. No pensé que ibas a nacer tan pronto, se equivocó el doctor. Pero luego regresamos a México.
-¿Entonces es cierto lo que dice el Tommie, que soy americana porque nací aquí?
-Ve y dile a tu primo Tommie que eres mexicana.
-Ya le dije.
-Ve y dile otra vez.
-Hello, aunt Tillie. Yes, mother is in the back porch. You want me to tell her you're here?
-Mamá, acaba de llegar tía Matilde; te está esperando en la sala. ¿Puedo salir a jugar con Rosa? Está bien, regreso a las seis.
